(KOPIUJ 2)

A group of students of New Media and Digital Culture from the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lodz, have launched the project "Obiecana po lata" [Promised after Years], the aim of which is to show how places in Lodz, which served as film sets for Andrzej Wajda's cult masterpiece "Ziemia obiecana" [The Promised Land] from 1975, have changed. The first results of the students' work are already available on the website.

Creative course completion

Project-based course completion at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lodz is a popular form of testing students' knowledge in practice. Participants of the classes "Organisation and management of culture in the era of new media" under the supervision of Dr Natalie Moreno-Kamińska, as part of the summary of their studies, decided to present the history of places in Lodz known from the frames of the film "Ziemia obiecana" directed by Andrzej Wajda. Students took photographs of individual locations, comparing them with frames from the film.

In this way, we want to refer to the city's cinematic identity and history. With this educational and documentary initiative, we want to present Lodz as a living organism, whose industrial and film history still speaks today from the city's walls and streets

– explain the New Media and Digital Culture Students.

"Ziemia obiecana" rediscovered – 50 years after the premiere of Andrzej Wajda's film

To mark the 50th anniversary of the film's premiere, students set out in the footsteps of Karol Borowiecki, Maks Baum and Moryc Welt, visiting former factories, palaces of industrial tycoons, and streets that formed the backdrop for the story of the city of 19th-century capitalism.

The project is educational and non-commercial in nature. The initiative includes a website and an Instagram profile, where contemporary photos of places are published, which are an attempt to reproduce archival film frames, as well as short stories about the history and transformations of the city.

More information about the project can be found on the project website (in Polish) or on the project's Instagram profile.
